چکیده

Using data obtained between 1991 and 1996 with the SWICS instrument (Solar Wind Ion Composition Spectrometer) aboard the Ulysses spacecraft, a long time average of the (4He/3He) isotopic ratio of 2450 ± 460 in coronal hole dominated solar wind is derived. To assess the influence of inefficient Coulomb friction in the inner corona and to infer the solar photospheric abundance ratio from the solar wind flux ratio, the variation of the fluxes with different solar wind regimes is investigated and limits for the long time fractionation effects are given. Finally a present-day 4He/3He abundance ratio in the outer convective zone of (He/He)OCZ = 2670 ± 500) is derived.

Fractionation Processes in the Solar Wind Revealed by Noble Gases Collected by Genesis Regime Targets

Introduction: Genesis collected solar wind (SW) ions with one major objective being to obtain abundances and isotopic composition of ultra-volatile elements. The SW is a proxy for the composition of the solar outer convective zone (OCZ) and, hence for the solar nebula. For most elements accurate values for the isotopic composition of sun can be inferred from meteorites. Carbonaceous chondrites ...

Abundances of Deuterium and Helium-3 in the Protosolar Cloud

The mass spectrometric determinations of the isotopic composition of helium in the solar wind obtained from (1) the Apollo Solar Wind Composition (SWC) experiment, (2) the Ion Composition Instrument (ICI) on the International Sun Earth Explorer 3 (ISEE-3), and (3) the Solar Wind Composition Spectrometer (SWICS) on Ulysses are reviewed and discussed, including new data given by Gloeckler and Gei...

Are Helium Line Intensities Affected by Abundance Variations?

Solar wind measurements show that the helium abundance in the outer solar atmosphere is not constant. Recent research has isolated some of the physical mechanisms that determine helium abundance variations along an open magnetic field line: gravitational settling in both the chromosphere and corona tends to transport helium downward, while the thermal force in the transition region and the drag...

Low-level Magnesium Isotopic Analysis for the Genesis Mission

Introduction: The Sun includes 99.9% of the mass of the solar system, so analysis of the isotopic compositions of elements from the Sun should be representative of the initial and/or bulk isotopic composition of planetary materials. Gravitational settling from the Outer Convection Zone (OCZ) of the Sun may contribute towards systematic light isotope enrichment of a few per mil detectable in the...

Non-WKB Models of the FIP Effect: Implications for Solar Coronal Heating and the Coronal Helium and Neon Abundances

We revisit in more detail a model for element abundance fractionation in the solar chromosphere, that gives rise to the “FIP Effect” in the solar corona and wind. Elements with first ionization potential below about 10 eV, i.e. those that are predominantly ionized in the chromosphere, are enriched in the corona by a factor 3-4. We model the propagation of Alfvén waves through the chromosphere u...
